Camping at the reservoir Lipno - inspiration and recommendation.

By Elisa | On 24. Mai 2018 take an adVANture · On May 24, 2018

Reservoir Lipno, Czech Republic. The great thing about long weekends is the time you have for yourself and your friends. The camping bus is packed and it is not only in the vicinity, but maybe a little further away. But where to go?

My grandparents have been traveling with their caravan all over Europe for years, and each time I listen intently to their stories. In my plans for upcoming road trips, I often call their stories to mind and remember the many places they've already seen. And one of these goals is my recommendations for a nice, natural camping trip. Or also: How Sweden is suddenly in the Czech Republic.

The Lipno dam is located in the southwest of the Czech Republic, near the borders with Germany and Austria. It also borders the National Park and the Šumava Biosphere Reserve and winds its way gently along the natural terrain.

Only a few kilometers northwest of the Vltava, the river is thus origin and inflow from the reservoir.

Here, the slowness finds its way and gives itself with the serenity the latch in the hand. Mass tourism is sought in vain, but nature is the highlight and the destination.

Together with husband and friends I spent a few wonderful days at the lake, in early May in the best weather. There was not much going on so we could enjoy some sections by the water all to ourselves. The Lipno Reservoir is no longer an insider tip, so it can be crowded in the main season. For this reason, I would like to recommend you the trip in the off season, for more solitude.

The area is known for a variety of campsites, for every preference and for every type of campervan. Since for me the alternatives to wild camping are only small natural places, I have deliberately looked for such. And I found several times, but then I decided for the smallest campsite. Right on the water and "back to basic".

Camp Lipno Vřesná is located directly on the lakeshore in a meadow. At a length of about 150m here are old campers, small camper vans, tents and caravans in a maximum of two rows. Next to it runs a small shore road, a pedestrian and bicycle path, which can be followed on foot in a short time to Frymburk.

Although most of the pitches seem to be occupied by permanent campers, the flair is exactly what I was looking for. Here you spend most of your time outside, around the campfire, fishing and drinking beer. The jump into the lake is only a few steps away and the water temperature is pleasantly refreshing.

A short note about the equipment: The showers (payable separately via a coin machine) and separate toilets are clean, but kept simple. Drinking water is available and there are possibilities for washing dishes under the open sky. The price is extremely cheap (for 4 adults, 1 child, 2 VW T5 as Campervans and 3 nights we have paid the equivalent of just 40 €), is paid in Czech crowns.

In search of a natural campsite at the reservoir Lipno, I have also come across other providers, I would like to share with you:

✔ The campsite Frymburk is much bigger and more modern, but also located directly on the water.

✔ The Lipno Modřín campsite is much too large and too well developed for me, but I would like to mention it anyway.

✔ At Camp Villa Bohemia you can also book small cabins.

✔ The Jestřábí Camp offers several overnight accommodations, but is also one of the big campsites.

✔ The Olšina campsite is partially wooded and some pitches are thus protected from direct sunlight.

✔ Caravan Camping Horní Planá is one of the more modern facilities, with its own sandy beach.

✔ And last but not least, the Jenišov campsite with similar facilities as the previous ones.

There are a lot of activities at the Lipno Reservoir, we had done at that time ... nothing. It was just so wonderful to have nothing, just to want. And the desire was limited to a large breakfast on the lake, with home-baked rolls, followed by long conversations and small excursions with our campervan in the vicinity. Then it went back to the water, firewood was collected in the forest and cut into handy pieces, then to prepare the food over the campfire and to sit in the flickering light far into the darkness. Nothing more needs man to be happy.

Nevertheless, I would like to tell you about some sights and highlights around the Lipno Reservoir.

The treetop path and the kingdom of the forest are two of the main attractions near the reservoir. Pleased to visit, relatively expensive, but next time I would like to see both. The city of Český Krumlov seems to be a must for architects and city- dwellers , with the historic old town just 30 km away. Some beaches invite you to swim, but also between the official sections you will find enough lonely spots.

Fishing is probably one of the main activities of the Czechs here, because on the shore or on boats in the water you can see a lot of anglers. Wild fishing is strictly prohibited! How to get a valid fishing license, you will learn HERE .

⇒ Note: It is not possible to completely circumnavigate the Lipno Reservoir with the vehicle as some roads in the National Park are closed to public car traffic. Small car and passenger ferries but allow the translation to the other shore (sometimes only from early / mid-May).

The flat terrain around the lake is also great for long bike rides. If you want something more active, have a look at the Bikepark Lipno . You can walk here everywhere, but I have not found any special appealing tours in my research. About tips from you, I am glad at any time. And then there is the water sports, which is definitely not too short here. The Vltava River is a paradise for kayaking or canoeing, divided into the upper and lower Vltava areas, ie to the right and left of the Lipno Reservoir. Provider and information can be found HERE and HERE .

I am very happy about feedback, even though you have been on the Lipno Reservoir before. If you liked the post, then share it with family and friends.

Hello unfortunately only nice to camp, etc., because Baden is not possible.
The whole lake full of blue-green algae (bacteria) ... Too bad

      Hello Gunter,

That's a pity. At the beginning of May last year we did not have any problems, in the lake you could swim and the quality of the water was great. Even the hot months do not always pass unnoticed by nature.

      Greeting,
      Elisa

Nice and informative report! In the years 2005 - 2012 we have spent our summer holidays at campsite Modrin with caravan / motorhome. In the beginning, the Campinplatz was still kept very simple, as was still little going on. In front of almost every caravan / motorhome a campfire burned in the evening - pure romance. However, the pricing at the CP Modrin has developed very negative and now almost reaches Croatia Nivau - and at significantly less power or offer! At the beginning we paid 13 - 14 Euro per night (2 adults + 1 child + dog), meanwhile we are already at 40 Euro in the main season ... .. The construction of the Lakeside-houses, Landal etc .... The prices have already driven up very high. We have never seen algae in the years we have been there (from the middle of August to the end of August we were there in the years mentioned above.) Nevertheless, it is a very beautiful spot in the world and after a few years of Croatia, we talk more and more about it to go there again.

      Hi Peter,

Thank you for your detailed comment! Unfortunately, I can not say anything about the pricing because we were on a very small and quite remote CP, where bonfires were still burning everywhere and nature was in the foreground. I think with a bit of searching you can still find these gems. Have a look over there, maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

      Love from,
      Elisa
